Irene Villamor on creating ‘Only We Know’: ‘Time definitely made the film better’

As the unique story of Ryan and Betty-—portrayed by Dingdong Dantes and Ms. Charo Santos, respectively—continues to redefine romance, “Only We Know” consistently delivers success for Filipino cinema following its local and international screenings despite the existing challenges of bringing the Filipino audiences back into theater houses.

Distinguished film director Irene Emma Villamor reveals that the film took seven years to finish, believing that this period allowed “Only We Know” to provide an even more solid experience to its audiences. “Time definitely made the film better. One of the key themes in the movie is waiting. So all that waiting just made the film deeper and more introspective. It really gave us the chance to think about what we wanted to say, especially that this is a tougher time for local movies,” Direk Irene shared.

Moreover, “Only We Know” made headlines as it starred two of the biggest names in the entertainment industry today, giving life to an unusual plot. While Direk Irene finds working with the best stars an honor, she also sees it as an opportunity to work on her craft. “Working with them is a challenge as well, to really improve on my craft and see what else I can do given that it’s an unusual pairing for a love story.”

Celebrating its remarkable local and international feat, Direk Irene shares the film’s milestone with her lead stars, and all the members of the production who worked hard in creating the film. She also expressed her gratitude to the producers, who helped her deliver the film’s message, mentioning Cornerstone Studios, Agosto Dos Pictures, and Star Cinema.

“Special shout out to our producers, Sir Erickson and Sir Jeff and Dong as Agosto Dos and Tita Malou Santos. Thank you to Sir Erickson who gave this concept a greenlight. It’s tough to really weave your art into the mainstream so I’m just happy that he believes in me so much he produced this even if it’s actually a suntok sa buwan,” Direk Irene said.

Meanwhile, after delivering the feat, Direk Irene Emma Villamor looks forward to more for the future of “Only We Know.” “I hope we get to join some festivals. And maybe picked up by a streaming platform. But as of this writing, we’re on our third week. We still have maybe 50 cinemas. It’s a feat given that Hollywood summer movies are coming in.”
